Fun in the Sun
Most kids have a wide variety of outdoor extracurricular activities to choose from, but kids with special needs often have limited options. Shaka Soul Surfers is a surf school that was designed for kids with special needs. On June 26, 2021, Reese and I volunteered here to help give surfing lessons to kids in the program. Imagine a place where your job as a volunteer is to provide kids with exciting activities and watch them have fun and light up with joy as they are riding the waves. At first, I was a little nervous because I’ve never volunteered at a surfing school. Once the volunteers with more experience instructed me what to do, I felt more comfortable about helping out. I loved seeing the kids smiling after they rode a wave. It was fulfilling to know I was part of a cause that makes other lives joyful. I had a great experience and I would love to go back and help.

So far Shaka Soul Surfers was my favorite place to volunteer. Yes, we only volunteered at two places but this one was better for me and matched my interests. Shaka Soul Surfers is a non profit organization that allows one on one surf lessons with special needs children. I loved watching every single kid there have the biggest smile on their face. I like water, surfing, and the beach so this was the perfect fit. When we got there we had to wait a bit because every kid there had all the volunteers they needed. Waiting around wasn’t a bad thing because that just showed how many people were there helping. I would definitely go back and volunteer with them.
