On April 7th, 2024, our team volunteered at the Parkland Farmer’s Market, with Lori Alhadeff’s organization: Make Our Schools Safe. This organization is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting students and teachers by creating and maintaining a culture of safety in our schools. Following the devastating Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in 2018, the Alhadeff family founded this organization, in honor of their 14-year-old daughter, Alyssa Alhadeff. The MOSS foundation works with high-level security advisors to offer survival information for protection in emergencies. Their goal is to bring these skills to schools, so educators have the confidence to know what to do in emergency situations, while protecting their students and themselves. Although nothing can make up for what happened on 2/14/2018 at MSD High School, this organization has worked to prevent this devastation from happening again by creating a law and making significant donations towards the safety procedures for schools. Firstly, Alyssa’s Law had been created and passed in sixteen states. According to this legislation, silent panic alarms must be installed and connected to law enforcement, so in the event of an emergency, they can respond swiftly, remove threats, and assess victims. Alyssa’s Law speeds up the response time of law enforcement and plays a crucial role in saving people’s lives. In addition, with the donations made by the nation, MOSS has been able to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars towards school safety, suicide prevention, and scholarships.
Make Our Schools Safe has made a significant impact on school’s safety nationwide and being able to collaborate with them was an honor and a great experience. While volunteering in April, we promoted the organization by talking to people in the community and handing out flyers with more information about the organization. We also collected donations from selling merchandise. This is an important organization to support and I encourage others to learn more on their website https://makeourschoolssafe.org
